Welcome to Saltandpepperthearth! My name is Kristen and I am learning how to become a modern homesteader.
I am new to blogging, but I am excited to share what I learn as I go.
Inquiring minds may want to know what I mean by “homesteading”. The term homesteading basically refers to a life-style of self-sufficiency. It means growing your own food and preserving it, for example. It can also include raising livestock and producing textiles for the benefit of one’s household. As of late, “getting back to basics” and “living off the land” has regained popularity and become a bit of a social movement!
In this context, homesteading and “urban homesteading” are terms used interchangeably. University of California-Davis explains: “an urban homestead is a household that produces a significant part of the food, including produce and livestock, consumed by its residents. This is typically associated with residents’ desire to live in a more environmentally conscious manner.”
Sounds pretty good, right? Yeah, I thought so too!
